LAS VEGAS - UNLV swept singles play en route to a 7-0 defeat of Utah State in Friday's first round of the UNLV Men's Tennis Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels, who are playing for the first time since January 19, earned their first victory of the season after opening with two road defeats. Utah State fell to 0-4.
UNLV opened the day by winning two of three doubles matches for one team point. The only Rebel loss came at the third spot where UNLV's freshman starting middle linebacker Ryan Claridge made his college tennis debut with partner Gregor Skorin, but fell 8-4.
Winning their singles matches for the Rebels were Thomas Schneiter, Danny Erez, Artin Tafazoli, Leslie Eisinga, Skorin and Marko Blagojevic.
UNLV will face Northern Arizona in Saturday's second round beginning at 1 p.m. The Lumberjacks posted a first-round shutout over Nevada, Reno. Also moving to the winners bracket were Colorado, which downed Idaho State 6-1, and Texas-Arlington, which whitewashed Weber State 7-0.
The finals are set for Sunday.
