LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior Nenad Zivkovic rallied at the top singles position to clinch both his match and his team's championship of the UNLV Men's Tennis Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Sunday.
The Rebels improved to 3-2 overall and 3-0 at home while the Buffaloes fell to 3-1. UNLV opened the day by winning two of three doubles matches for one team point.
In singles play, the Rebels got a quick win from Gregor Skorin at the fifth spot for a 2-0 lead. CU's Bryan Knepper then dispatched Artin Tafazoli at No. 4 to get his team on the board. UNLV got another point from the bottom of the lineup as Leslie Eisinga won in straight sets at No. 6. The Buffs tied things at three, however, by winning at both the No. 2 and No. 3 courts.
Zivkovic, meanwhile, was battling back at the top after dropping the first set to Maciej Dilaj. Zivkovic, who improved to 12-3 on the season, won the second set and then quickly ended the match with an easy third-set victory, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
"Nenad was big time," UNLV head coach Larry Easley said. "He has become a team leader in his senior season and he saved us today."
UNLV, which met CU in three of the last six finals of the annual invitational, has now won its own tournament for six straight years.
Next up for the Rebels is a visit to third-ranked UCLA Saturday.
