The No. 21 UNLV golf team kicks off the spring portion of the 2000-01 season this week at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Honolulu, Hawaii. The University of Hawaii hosts the 54-hole, three-day tournament to be played at Leilehua Golf Course from Wednesday, Feb. 21 to Friday, Feb. 23.
Joining UNLV among the talented field of teams will be Arizona, Oklahoma State, New Mexico and Hawaii.
Last season, the Rebels captured fourth place at the John Burns behind a record-setting performance from Jeremy Anderson. Anderson fired three consecutive rounds of 66 to take medalist honors, and his 54-hole score of 198 broke his own school record for low tournament score by three strokes.
Representing UNLV at the John A. Burns will be senior Scott Lander, junior Justin Lee, sophomore Calvin Kupeyan, and freshmen James Oh and Travis Whisman.
Lander is the only Rebel to have played in the John A. Burns, returning to the Leilehua Golf Course for the fourth time in his career. Last season was his best effort in the tourney as he turned in his best career 54-hole score, tying for fifth place overall with an eight-under par 208.
The Rebels continue to get outstanding contribution from their freshman class. UNLV ranks sixth nationally in Golfstat's Freshman Class Impact Ranking. Individually, Oh continues his strong debut season as UNLV's stroke average leader. He enters the spring as the 43rd-ranked collegian nationally.
In its last outing, UNLV finished in fifth place at the College Golf Foundation Match Play Team Championships last November after defeating top-ranked Clemson head-to-head.
Following this week's action, the Rebels will take two weeks to prepare for their only home action of the season, the Las Vegas Intercollegiate. The Las Vegas Intercollegiate will be held at Rio Secco Golf Course on Friday, March 9 through Sunday, March 11.
