HONOLULU - James Oh fired a first-round four-under-par 68 as the UNLV men's golf team sits in sixth place at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Wednesday.
Oh is in a five-way tie for fifth place and only two strokes behind co-leaders Alex Aragon of Stanford and Michael Letzig of New Mexico after shooting two-under on both the front and back nines of the Leilehua Golf Course.
Following the 66 by Aragon and a round of 67 by teammate James Lee, Stanford leads the 19-team field at 13-under-par. However, eight squads finished their first round under par and remain well within striking distance of the Cardinal, including the Rebels at three-under.
Scott Lander, playing in his fourth John A. Burns tournament, is tied for 23rd place after a one-under round of 71. Lander finished fifth individually at this event in 2000.
Rounding out UNLV's scorecard were freshman Travis Whisman, one stroke behind Lander and tied for 30th, sophomore Calvin Kupeyan, who shot a two-over 74 and sits 51st, and junior transfer Justin Lee, whose 77 was thrown out of the team's daily total.
Round two of the 54-hole affair commences Thursday morning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.
