Box Score
LAS VEGAS - Georgia Tech increased its lead from one stroke to nine with a nine-under par 279 in the second round of the Callaway Golf Las Vegas Intercollegiate at Rio Secco Golf Course on Saturday.
Kris Mikkelsen, Bryce Molder and Matt Weibring all fired 69s on Saturday to lead the Yellow Jackets' charge away from the pack. Clemson trails Georgia Tech and retained its hold on second place in the team standings after carding 28.
The Yellow Jackets weren't the only ones to improve upon their lead as Arizona State's Jeff Quinney maintained his spot atop the pack in the individual race. He followed his 69 on Friday with a five-under 67 on Saturday, and at eight-under par for the tourney, Quinney holds a six stroke lead over four others.
Conditions throughout the course were much improved on Saturday as six teams recorded sub-par scores. During Friday's opening round, Georgia Tech led the field at four-over par. Only 11 golfers in the 75-player field have scored par or better for the tourney.
UNLV senior Scott Lander, who stood tied for 19th after an opening-round 75, benefited from the improved play, firing a one-under 71 on Saturday. At two-over, he is tied for 17th and sits just 10 strokes behind Quinney.
The Rebels' James Oh also took advantage of the better conditions, rebounding from his worst career round of 84 with a one-under 71. The play of Lander and Oh helped the Rebels climb one spot in the team standings to 13th after a four-over par round.
Also scoring for UNLV were Brett Foulds and Calvin Kupeyan, each with a three-over 75. The Rebels threw out Travis Whisman's 79.
Final round action will begin at 7:30 a.m. PT on Sunday.
