LAS VEGAS - Georgia Tech shot a final-round 15-under par 273 to capture the team title by 24 strokes and Arizona State's Jeff Quinney fired his second straight 67 on Sunday to win medalist honors by seven shots at the Callaway Golf Las Vegas Intercollegiate.
Both Quinney and the Yellow Jackets jumped out to early leads at Rio Secco Golf Course and led throughout the tournament. Tech, after leading all schools with a four-over-par score in the first round, improved its play as the weather improved and recorded the lowest team score for each round. Three Yellow Jackets finished in the top six, led by Troy Matteson, who carded the tournament's low round of 66 on Sunday to capture second place.
Matteson's efforts weren't enough to knock off Quinney, however, as the Sun Devils' senior shot 69-67-67 to finish 13-under par at 203.
UNLV's Scott Lander led his squad through all three rounds despite playing No. 4 in the Rebels' lineup. He saved his best round for last, as well, shooting 68 on Sunday to tie for eighth place and collect his second straight top-10 finish.
The Rebels, who got off to a horrific start with a 28-over-par 316 on Friday, steadily improved. They climbed to 13th place after Round 2 with a four-over 292 and jumped one more spot on Sunday after a four-under 284.
Sophomore Brett Foulds, like Lander, picked up his play with every round and tied for 39th overall after a final-day round of even par.
Rounding out the Rebels' lineup were sophomore Calvin Kupeyan, who tied for 49th at 11-over, freshman James Oh, who tied for 56th at 13-over, and freshman Travis Whisman, who finished 74th at 24-over.
UNLV remains idle for two weeks before gathering with another field of the nation's elite at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas, on March 26-27.
