March 31, 2001

LAS VEGAS - The 60th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team lost the decisive doubles point and fell 4-3 to No. 36 BYU in a Mountain West Conference battle at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Saturday.

The defending champion Lady Rebels fell to 5-9 overall and 3-8 at home and 1-1 in the league while the Cougars improved to 10-7 and 4-0 in the MWC.

The Cougars began the day by winning the doubles point despite UNLV's upset at the top spot where Paulina Janus and Agniesza Abram downed the 22nd-ranked team of Jodi Richardson and Brooke Ferney, 8-4.

Behind 1-0, UNLV needed to win four singles matches to pull off the upset but was only able to split.

Janus rallied to upset 37th-ranked Richardson at the top spot, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, while Marianne Bakken and Britta Gabl won their matches in straight sets.

After BYU earned points at No. 2 and 4 courts, the match came down to the sixth position where Lindsey Ferrell escaped with a dramatic 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 clinching victory over Amy Hadziosmanovic.

UNLV next hosts No. 66 San Diego State on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
