LAS VEGAS - The injury-plagued 32nd-ranked UNLV men's tennis team had its unlikely four-match winning streak snapped, 5-1, at San Diego State Sunday.
The Rebels fell to 11-7 overall and lost their first Mountain West Conference match in three tries while the Aztecs improved to 9-9 and 3-0 in the league.
With only five players making the trip, UNLV began the day by defaulting the third doubles match and No. 6 singles match. The Rebel duo of Nenad Zivkovic and Thomas Schneiter won at the top doubles position, 8-2, over Oliver Maiberger and Adam Webster, but the Aztecs took the No. 2 match to earn one team point.
In singles, Maiberger, ranked 22nd, won the showdown at the top by sweeping No. 61 Nenad Zivkovic 6-2, 6-3. SDSU also scored with straight-set victories at the third and fifth courts. UNLV's lone point came from Schneiter downing Webster 6-1, 6-1 at the second spot. The match on the fourth court did not finish.
The Rebels will continue conference play this week by traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face No. 63 New Mexico on Friday and then close out the regular season against host Air Force on Saturday.
