Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Clark Corbett, Scott Lander and Travis Whisman all fired rounds in the 60s on Saturday as the UNLV men's golf team climbed from 15th place to ninth after the final round of the ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational at Tempe's Karsten Golf Course.

Corbett, a junior college transfer playing in just his second tournament as a Rebel, collected the highest finish for UNLV. After rounds of 73 and 71 on Friday, he shot a final-round 68 to finish tied for 18th, four strokes under par.

Senior Scott Lander, the Rebels steadiest player and the Mountain West Conference leader in stroke average, followed a pair of par rounds on Friday with a 69. He tied for 21st, one shot behind Corbett.

The biggest surprise of the day was freshman Travis Whisman, who bounced back from an opening-round score of 76 to blister the course with a 66 on Saturday. He posted the best final-round score in the tournament and the best single round by any Rebel since Jeremy Anderson carded three straight 66s to win the John A. Burns Intercollegiate last season. Whisman finished the tournament at even par, tied for 41st.

Both Calvin Kupeyan and Brandon Askew shot 74 on Saturday to give the Rebels a final-round team score of 277, 11 strokes under par.

Host Arizona State turned in a 12-under 276 on Saturday and surprised first-day leader Texas for the team crown. The Longhorns finished second after a three-over par round on Saturday. Oklahoma State's Anders Hultman stole the medalist honors.

The tournament was the last of the regular season for UNLV, which heads to Sun River, Ore., to defend its Mountain West Conference title on Monday, April 30.
