Softball Swept By BYU

PROVO, Utah - The UNLV softball team dropped a doubleheader to BYU 7-1 and 10-2 on Saturday in Provo, Utah. The Rebels fall to 25-25 on the year and 6-10 in conference play. BYU improves to 29-22 and 8-5 in conference play.

Game one began with the Cougars putting up three runs in the very first inning. On the second pitch of the bottom of the first inning, BYU freshman Oli Keohohou hit her 19th long ball of the season giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Keohohou leads the nation in home runs. The Cougars scored two more runs in the inning to take a 3-0 lead. BYU added two more runs in the second inning as Rebel freshman hurler Kacey Ellis was relieved midway through the second inning for junior Geney Orris.

The Cougars added another two runs in the fourth inning, taking a 7-0 lead. UNLV scored its lone run in the fifth as senior Melissa Inouye hit a double down the left field line setting up senior Marisa Martinez who doubled to center field scoring senior Stephanee Italiano who came in to pinch-run for Inouye, cutting the Cougar lead to 7-1.

Game two began with the Cougars agains scoring in the first inning. This time, BYU only got one run in the inning. The Cougars added another run in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Rebel senior Linda Garza changed that in the fourth inning as she hit a two-run home run, her third of the season equalizing the game at two apiece.

The bottom of the fourth proved disastrous for the Rebels as the Cougars batted around and scored eight runs on six hits, taking a 10-2 lead. The Rebels were unable to get anything across in the fifth to prevent the eight run rule from happening. The game ended midway through the fifth with the score BYU 10 and UNLV 2.

The Rebels return home for a doubleheader against New Mexico on Friday at noon at the Rebel Diamond. Then on Sunday, the Rebels finish the regular season with a twin-bill against Colorado State beginning at noon also. The Rebels split with each team in their first meetings.
