Softball Drops Sixth Straight

May 4, 2001

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team dropped its fifth and sixth games in a row on Friday at the Rebel Diamond. The Rebels fell in game one 4-2 and 6-0 in game two. With the losses, the Rebels fall under .500 for the first time this season to 25-27 overall and 6-12 in conference play. New Mexico improves to 36-21-1 on the year and 9-8-1 in conference play.

Game one began with taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double by senior Racheal Goodpaster, scoring later on a wild pitch and senior Linda Garza also scored on a wild pitch later in the inning, giving the Rebels a 2-0 lead.

The Lobos evened the score at two in the fourth inning on a single by Brooke Chaffee and a sacrifice fly to right field by Elena Cranmer. After that inning, the momentum began to swing towards New Mexico and the Lobos had the bases loaded in the top of the fifth with one out but were unable to score.

The Rebels were unable to get anything home in the fifth inning or sixth innings, sending the game to the seventh tied at two apiece.

The Lobos led off the seventh inning with two RBI doubles to give New Mexico a 4-2 lead.

With one last at bat, the Rebels were unable to get anything across in the seventh, falling 4-2.

Game two started out a pitcher's duel as neither team could produce much offense until the fourth inning when New Mexico opened the scoring with two runs in the inning, giving it a 2-0 lead. The very next inning, the Lobos poured it on, scoring four times on three hits giving New Mexico a 6-0 lead.

The Rebels had their best chance in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out but junior Arica Painter hit into an inning ending double play to end the possible rally.

After that, the Rebels couldn't produce much offense to cut into the Lobo deficit and fell 6-0.

The Rebels will be in action Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at the Rebel diamond for the season finale doubleheader against Colorado State. Both the Rams and Rebels won a game in Fort Collins, Colo., earlier in the season.
