TULSA, Okla. - In its 2001 season opener, the UNLV men's soccer team defeated Southwest Missouri State, 2-1, at the Golden Hurricane Kickoff Classic held at Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex in Tulsa, Okla.
SMS would jump out to an early lead after Doug Lascody headed into a cross from the left side to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage at the 11:16 minute mark.
In the second period, the Rebels made a comeback on a goal by senior Jason Melendez, who connected on a penalty kick in the 54th minute. UNLV sealed the victory when junior transfer Kelly Frederick headed into a corner kick from freshman Justin Mannino off the left side. The goal marked Frederick's first as a Rebel after transferring from Bryant & Stratton College.
Senior goalkeeper Scott Winstead had four saves, while SMS goalie Josh Sampson deflected eight.
The Rebels continue tournament competition tomorrow with a matchup scheduled against host Tulsa at 8:05 p.m. (CST).
