Men's Soccer Knocks Off Tulsa

Sept. 1, 2001

TULSA, Okla. - Behind a game-winning goal by sophomore Alex Hernandez in the 60th minute, the UNLV men's soccer team defeated host Tulsa, 2-1, to improve to 2-0 on the season and capture the Golden Hurricane Kickoff Classic title Saturday night in Tulsa, Okla.

Junior Tuomas Talvio led the opening charge for the Rebels at the 34:39 minute mark, completing a shot from the left side, 8-yards out from senior Tyler Turchi.

Three seconds before halftime, Tulsa's Mario Gonzalez connected on a free kick from the top of the penalty box to knot the game at one apiece.

Hernandez would score his game-winner off a rebound in front of the net. With the win, UNLV evens its all-time series record with Tulsa to 3-3.

Junior Justin Dennis, a transfer and newcomer from Phoenix College, received the starting nod in goal, posting eight saves in 90 minutes, while the Golden Hurricane's Brent Salter had five.

Hernandez, Turchi, Dennis, and senior Scott Winstead were named to the 2001 Microtel Inn & Suites/Golden Hurricane Hurricane Kickoff Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Rebels will next play host to a four-team tournament on Sept. 7 and Sept. 9 in their home opener at Peter Johann Memorial Field. UNLV kicks off the tournament with Vanderbilt at 7:30 p.m., while San Diego and New Mexico meet prior to that game at 5 p.m.
