WOODLAND, Calif. - Sophomore Alex Hernandez, a midfielder on the UNLV men's soccer team, was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Brine Player of the Week as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
The Indio, Calif. native, collected his first career hat trick in a 6-1 upset of fifth-ranked and defending national champion Connecticut on Sept. 23. He currently leads the Rebels in scoring with six goals for 12 points and is tied for second among MPSF leaders in the same category.
Hernandez is the first UNLV player to record a hat trick since the 1997 season, when former Rebel Daniel Schloss had three goals against Texas Christian on Oct. 10, 1997, in Fort Worth, Texas.
He currently is tied for 14th among NCAA leaders in goals per game with a 1.0 average in six games played. Hernandez was also named to Soccer America's Team of the Week for competition during the week of Sept. 17-23.
