Bakken Wins Consolation Title

Jan. 20, 2002

LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior Marianne Bakken used three sets to down Ashley Robards of Tennessee and win the women's singles consolation bracket of the 2002 National Collegiate Tennis Classic at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Sunday.

The win wrapped up a successful weekend for the Lady Rebels against competition from three of the nation's top 15 teams.

"I am very excited with the way we have started our spring season," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "We competed against some of the top teams in the country and were very competitive. Watch out for the Rebels this spring."

The Lady Rebels open dual-match play by hosting in-state rival Nevada, Reno on Feb. 1. In the main draw, Tennessee's Vilmarie Castellvi, ranked 20th, upset 11th-ranked Gabriela Lastra of Stanford, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, for the singles title.

On the men's side, unranked Rodrido Grill of UCLA continued to shock everyone by upsetting No. 49 David Martin of Stanford, 6-4, 7-5, for the crown. In consolation play, Phil Sheng downed Sam Warburg, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, in a battle of Stanford teammates.

The Rebel men's squad opens play Jan. 29 at third-ranked UCLA.
