LAS VEGAS - With eight seconds remaining in overtime, sophomore midfielder Jessika Vasquez (Las Vegas) scored the game-winning golden goal in the 110th minute to lift the UNLV women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout of Air Force Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The win gave UNLV its first conference victory of the season and improved the Rebels to 9-4-1 overall, 1-1-0 MWC. This game also marked Vasquez's first goal of the year and second of her career.
During regulation, the Rebels had numerous scoring opportunities, but could not find the back of the net. It would come down to the very end, as freshman Nickie Olson (Las Vegas) orchestrated the game-winning play by sending a leftside cross over the penalty area with Vasquez driving in the header.
Freshman goalkeeper Jenna Huff (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made two saves in the shutout, while Air Force goalkeeper Jennifer Wolf had a career night with 15 saves on 22 UNLV shots.
Up next, the Rebels will host conference opponent Wyoming (4-9-1, 0-3-0 MWC) on Sunday, Oct. 20 at noon in their final home game of the season. Six seniors will play in their last home match of their career on Senior Day at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
