Jet-Fueled Rebels Down Air Force

Oct. 27, 2002

Box Score

LAS VEGAS - With a 6-0 shutout of Air Force, the UNLV men's soccer team claimed its 10th victory of the season and remained undefeated in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

UNLV started its scoring spurt early as junior Leandro Iocco (Rosario, Argentina) chipped in the game-opening goal over the head of Air Force goalkeeper Mike Taylor at 2:39. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Boomer Arbelaez (Las Vegas) put in a header off a cross from junior Alex Hernandez (Indio, Calif.) to extend the lead to 2-0.

In the 27th minute, freshman Rod Dyachenko (Vancouver, Wash.) scored off a pass across the box from senior co-captain Reggie Bolden (Jacksonville, Ark.) to give the Rebels a 3-0 advantage into halftime.

The scoring didn't stop there. In the second half, senior Kelly Frederick (St. John's, Antigua) netted his seventh goal of the season shooting the ball under the keeper on a pass up the middle by Hernandez. Iocco later scored his second goal of the match unassisted at 66:03.

In the final minute of regulation, freshman Mark Stock (Tigard, Ore.) dribbled the ball down the middle for the team's sixth and final goal of the game.

Senior goalkeeper Justin Dennis (Scottsdale, Ariz.) played 70 minutes with four saves, while freshman Peter Clitheroe (Cheshire, England) came in relief. Dennis earned his third shutout of the year and currently holds a 1.30 GAA.

The Rebels looked to payback the Falcons (7-8-1 overall, 1-3 MPSF), after Air Force handed them a 5-0 shutout in Colorado Springs last season.

UNLV bettered its record to 10-5 overall, 3-0 MPSF and last captured 10 victories in the 2000 season. Two conference road matches are up ahead for the Rebels as they challenge league leader San Jose State on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Sacramento State on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m.
