LAS VEGAS - Behind goals by junior Alex Hernandez (Indio, Calif.) and senior Kelly Frederick (St. John's, Antigua), the UNLV men's soccer team collected its second shutout of the season in a 3-0 blowout of UC Riverside Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
In the first half of play, Hernandez opened scoring on a diving header with the assist from sophomore Brendon Bain (Beaverton, Ore.) for the 1-0 lead.
The Frederick-Hernandez connection began in the second half and produced back-to-back goals in the 64th and 68th minute. With the Rebels on the attack, Frederick received a short pass from Hernandez, to score the game's second goal from six-yards out. Three minutes later, the same exact play resulted on the give-and-go goal.
Hernandez currently leads the team in scoring with 17 points on six goals and five assists, while Frederick follows in second with nine points on three goals and three assists. Overall, UNLV outshot UC Riverside, 13-5, in the match.
Senior goalkeeper Justin Dennis (Scottsdale, Ariz.) claimed his second shutout of the season and holds an impressive 1.39 GAA in 10 games played. With the win, UNLV keeps its undefeated all-time series streak versus the Highlanders intact at 4-0.
The Rebels (7-4) return to action on Sunday, Oct. 13 with a non-conference game against Saint Mary's College at 3 p.m. in Moraga, Calif.
