LAS VEGAS - UNLV women's soccer player Jenny Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) has been invited to tryout for a spot on the 2003 Mexican National Team.
Ruiz, a sophomore defender for the Rebels, will travel next week for the national team's training camp on Dec. 17-22 in Mexico City. Current WUSA players and former collegiate stars Monica Gerardo (Washington Freedom) and Monica Gonzalez (Boston Breakers) head up the current Mexican National Team roster.
The fourth annual FIFA Women's World Cup will be held on Sept. 24 through Oct. 11, 2003 in China. Thirty-two matches will be played in five host cities of Shanghai, Hongkou, Hangzhou, Wuhan and Chengdu.
Mexico is one victory away from reaching the 2003 tournament in China. As the third-place team of the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, Mexico will enter a playoff with the third-place team from Asia for a qualifying berth. In 1999, Mexico qualified for the Women's World Cup. The United States and Canada have already booked passage to next year's tournament.
UNLV SOCCER HOSTS WINTER CAMP...
The UNLV soccer program will host the 2002 Winter Break Soccer Spectacular Camp for boys and girls ages 5-18 on Dec. 21-23 at the UNLV Soccer Complex on campus.
The camp will feature guest coaches comprised of current professional players and Division I college coaches. U.S. National Team member Carlos Bocanegra, currently with the MLS's Chicago Fire, Maren Hendershot-Brown from the WUSA's San Jose CyberRays, UCLA men's soccer assistant coach Pete Van de Ven and UC Riverside men's soccer assistant coach Diego Bocanegra headline the list of guest coaches scheduled for appearance.
UNLV women's soccer head coach Dan Abdalla and UNLV men's soccer assistant coach Frank D'Amelio will be apart of the camp coaching staff along with players from both the UNLV men's and women's soccer teams. Cost for full day is $115, while a half day is offered for $75.
