LAS VEGAS - The 56th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team opened its season Friday by sweeping 75th-ranked Nevada, Reno at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in the 2002 debut for both programs.
The Lady Rebels opened the day by squeaking out the doubles point. UNLV won easily at No. 3 but fell at the top spot, 8-6, and won the second position 8-6.
In singles play, the Wolf Pack managed to win only one set. Winning in straight sets for UNLV were 59th-ranked Paulina Janus at the top spot, Agnieszka Abram at No. 2, Gyorgyi Zsiros at No. 3, Marianne Bakken at No. 5 and Leentjie Oosthuizen made her Lady Rebel debut a success at the sixth position. Freshman Tracie Chong took three sets to eek out a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 victory at No. 4.
"It feels good to get off to such a strong start," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "UNR is a strong team and beat us on our own courts last year (4-3 on March 7, 2001). For us to come out and win 7-0 in the opener really speaks well to the talent on this team."
The Lady Rebels host former Big West Conference-rival New Mexico State Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
