LAS VEGAS - Freshman pitcher Jackie Kerrigan struck out 13 batters and scattered five hits as the UNLV softball team defeated Kansas, 7-3, at the UNLV Softball Classic at Desert Breeze Complex on Friday.

Kerrigan (1-2) earned her first collegiate victory in her third career start and gave up all three runs on one swing of the bat by the Jayhawks' Serena Settlemier. Aside from Settlemier's long ball in the fourth, Kansas (3-4) could muster only four singles one runner into scoring position.

UNLV (4-5) gave Kerrigan plenty of breathing room with a five-run first inning. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Pauline Glenn who doubled to the gap in left field to drive in two. In the next at bat, first baseman Morgan Bostwick clubbed her first career home run to give the Rebels a 5-0 advantage.

Kansas cut the lead to 5-3 on the home run, but UNLV manufactured some insurance runs in the fifth with a single, two walks, three stolen bases, a Jayhawk error and a sacrifice fly by Bostwick for her fourth RBI of the game.

Settlemier (1-2) struck out four and walked one in the loss.

Both teams will continue play in the UNLV Softball Classic on Saturday. The Rebels begin the day with a 12:30 matchup against Texas Tech.
