Men's Tennis Earns First Win To Advance

LAS VEGAS - The 59th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season and moved into the championship of the school's annual spring invitational Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels (1-2) shut out in-state rival Nevada, Reno (1-6) and will meet Colorado in Sunday's title match, which is scheduled to begin at noon.

Making its home debut after opening on the road and enjoying a bye in Friday's first round, UNLV earned one team point by sweeping three doubles matches. In singles play, only one Rebel was pushed to a third set. Winning for the Rebels were Thomas Schneiter at No. 1, Romain Tug at No. 2, Aviram Salomon at No. 3, Thomas Michaud at No. 4, Leslie Eisinga at No. 5 and Adreas Maurer on the sixth court.

Colorado advanced by downing No. 72 New Mexico State 6-1 in the day's other semifinal. NMSU will face UNR on Sunday for third place.

In the losers' bracket Utah State downed Weber State, 4-3, and will play Idaho State, which received a bye, on Sunday for fifth place. Weber State finishes at the seventh-place team.
