COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the second and third times in two weeks, a UNLV softball player has been honored by the Mountain West Conference as freshmen Jackie Kerrigan and Pauline Glenn were chosen the league's Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively.
In four appearances last week, Kerrigan recorded two wins and two saves. She claimed her first collegiate victory in a 13-strikeout complete-game effort against Kansas that snapped a three-game losing streak. She allowed just five hits, four singles and a three-run home run that accounted for all of the Jayhawks' scoring.
The next day, against Texas Tech, Kerrigan came on in relief and gave up just one hit in an inning of work to earn her first collegiate save. Just hours later, in the Rebels' game against Central Michigan, Kerrigan was again called from the bullpen. She took over with the Rebels down 4-3 and two runners on in the second inning and retired three straight to get out of the inning. She also sat down the next 12 batters, for a total of 15 straight, and erased 18 of 19 that she faced. She allowed just two hits, both in the bottom of the seventh, to earn her second win in as many days.
In UNLV's last game against Cal Poly, Kerrigan again came out of the bullpen to save a victory. She threw 1.2 innings and gave up just a single hit to preserve a 10-5 win over the Mustangs.
For the week, Kerrigan allowed just four earned runs in four games, struck out 18 and walked only four. In 15.2 innings of work, she posted a 1.79 ERA and allowed opponents to hit only .164 against her. Her two saves and three games finished were tournament bests, and her 18 strikeouts were third best among the tourney players.
Glenn, starting all five games at third base, batted .455 (5-for-11) and led her team with six runs, one double, two home runs, seven RBI, 12 total bases, a 1.091 slugging percentage, eight walks and a .667 on-base percentage. Her 1.091 slugging percentage led the tournament, and she was second among tourney players with eight walks and a .667 on base percentage. She scored at least one run in every game for the week and had three multi-RBI games.
For the season, Glenn has taken over the team lead and ranks among the league leaders in runs (10), home runs (3), RBI (11), slugging percentage (.625), walks (11), and on-base percentage (.488).
The awards mark the second and third for UNLV this young season. Senior pitcher Geney Orris was honored on Feb. 12 after posting a 2-0 record at the ASU Tourmament.
It is also the fourth time that UNLV has claimed MWC Pitcher and Player of the Week Awards during the same week. Six different Rebels were so honored in the first three weeks of last season.
