LAS VEGAS - Kacey Ellis carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a one-hit win as the UNLV softball team defeated Southern Utah, 7-2, in the nightcap of a Wednesday doubleheader at Eller Media Stadium.
Ellis had struck out six, walked three, and allowed no runner past second base through five innings. However, SUU's Rulen Andrade singled to left with one out and one on in the sixth. A fielding error by Rebel shortstop Amber Campbell allowed two runs to score and the T-Birds (7-9) to cut the UNLV lead to 7-2.
UNLV (9-5) steadily built a lead with runs in the second, third and fourth before a three-run homer by Geney Orris gave the Rebels all the breathing room it would need. Morgan Bostwick added a solo shot two batters later, her second of the year, to complete UNLV's scoring.
The win was the second of the day for UNLV, who escaped with a 1-0 eight-inning victory in the opener. Nicole Truax picked up her second win after pitching eight shut out innings and fanning five.
Despite Truax's pitching, the Rebels were unable to get on the scoreboard until the eighth inning when Lisa Moses scored the winning run on a wild pitch. It was the first extra-inning game for the Rebels this season.
Southern Utah pitcher Lacee Leprey held the Rebels to just three hits in the first game and retired 14 straight batters before the Rebels pulled Moses home in the eighth.
The wins were the fifth and sixth straight for UNLV, now on its longest winning streak since taking 15 in a row near the end of the 1995 season.
The Rebels also remained undefeated at their new stadium, improving to 4-0 at Eller Media this year. They return to the venue on Saturday, Feb. 23, when they host the University of the Pacific and DePaul University in a mini-tournament. Game times for the day have changed, with UOP and DPU squaring off at 12:30 p.m., UNLV and UOP following at 3:00 and UNLV and DPU ending the tripleheader at 5:30.
