Feb. 8, 2002

Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Andrea Kirchberg tossed a one-hitter and fanned 11 as No. 29 Wisconsin handed the UNLV softball team its first loss of the 2002 season, 3-0, at Arizona State's Farrington Stadium in the first round of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament on Friday.

UNLV's (2-1) Shawna Goessling collected the Rebels' only hit, leading off the fourth inning with a single and advanced to second on a Bridget Byrne sacrifice bunt. Kirchberg, however, got Melissa Inouye to fly out before striking out Pauline Glenn to end the threat.

Wisconsin (1-0) manufactured the winning run in the third behind a walk, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single by Boo Gillette. The Badgers added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of two UNLV fielding errors.

Sophomore Kacey Ellis (1-1) was the hard-luck loser, allowing just one earned run and three scattered singles.

UNLV will face No. 12 Nebraska in the second round of the tournament at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
