PHOENIX - Geney Orris struck out eight and hit a two-run homer to lead the UNLV softball team to a 6-4 upset of No. 24 Massachusetts at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament on Saturday.
The win was the second of the year for Orris (2-0) as was the home run. The senior scattered 10 hits, all singles, and went 2-for-4 at the plate in leading the Rebels (3-2) to their first victory over a ranked opponent since taking down then-No. 24 Cal State Northridge 7-5 last season.
UMass (3-1) took the early lead as leadoff hitter Emily Robustelli scored in the bottom of the first, but surrendered the advantage in the fourth when freshman Amber Campbell crushed a two-run shot over the left-field fence.
The Minutewomen answered in the fifth with their biggest inning, using three singles to regain the lead, 3-2. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Rebels exploded for four runs in the top of the sixth. Orris drove in the first two with the long ball to left center. Campbell followed with a walk and a stolen base and scored when Arica Painter hit a ball that Robustelli, the UMass shortstop, could not handle. Shawna Goessling than tacked on a single to drive in Painter and give the Rebels a 6-3 edge.
UMass picked up another run in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough to topple UNLV.
The Rebels will face No. 5 California at 5:30 p.m.
