LAS VEGAS - The inaugural UNLV Women's Tennis Spring Invitational kicked off Friday with all four higher ranked teams winning their matches at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus.
Host UNLV, ranked 53rd, lost only one set en route to a 7-0 whitewashing of unranked Boston College in the second-ever meeting between the programs. The Lady Rebels also shut out BC, 9-0, in 2000.
UNLV, which improved to 6-1 on the year to mark its best start since opening 10-1 in 1997, advances to meet No. 40 South Alabama in one of Saturday's semifinals. The Jaguars (6-5) got by unranked Furman 6-1in the day's other afternoon match.
The Lady Rebels began the day by sweeping three doubles matches for one team point. In singles play, five UNLV players won in straight sets: Paulina Janus at No. 1, Gyorgyi Zsiros at No. 2, Tracie Chong at No. 4, Leentjie Oosthuizen at No. 5 and Marianne Bakken at the sixth court. Agnieszka Abram rallied to win a third-set tiebreaker to make it a team sweep.
"I feel we got off to a good start in our own tournament," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "We have a big challenge tomorrow in South Alabama but I think we are ready to meet that challenge."
In the morning contests, No. 6-ranked Wake Forest improved to 8-1 on the year with a 6-1 win over unranked UC Santa Barbara, despite resting its top two singles players,
The Demon Deacons will face No. 49 Tulsa (7-2) in the other semifinal (2 p.m. PST) after the Golden Hurricane got by 67th-ranked New Mexico 5-2 despite the Lobos earning upset victories at both the top singles and doubles spots.
Boston College (2-3) will face Furman (5-2) in the losers' bracket Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The other match will pit UCSB (3-8) vs. New Mexico (4-6).
