LAS VEGAS - UNLV freshman Gyorgyi Zsiros has won her first Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week award, the league announced Monday.
Zsiros, from Budapest, Hungary, improved to 16-7 on the year in singles by winning her last five matches and eight of her last nine. Ranked 92nd and playing at the No. 2 position, Zsiros upset 39th-ranked Viktoria Stoklasova to help her team down South Alabama on March 2 and then one day later was tied in the third set with 24th-ranked Janet Bergman of No. 6 Wake Forest when the match was halted as the Demon Deacons won 4-2.
On March 6, Zsiros cruised past Delphine Troch of William & Mary as the 41st-ranked Lady Rebels shocked the No. 17 Tribe 5-1.
She also won three of her four doubles matches with partner Marianne Bakken to improve to 12-6 on the season.
Zsiros is already the third different UNLV women's player to earn the honor this spring, which is a school record. She joined Paulina Janus (February 7) and Bakken (February 22) in receiving the award.
