LAS VEGAS - Playing in sunny but cold conditions, the 27th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team jumped out to a 4-0 lead and then held on to down No. 30 Indiana 4-3 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.

The Lady Rebels improved to 10-2 on the year, including 9-1 at home, while the Hoosiers fell to 11-4 after playing their first outdoor match of 2002.

UNLV, which is now 6-2 vs. ranked teams this spring and 2-1 vs. IU all-time, began the day by winning two of three doubles matches for one team point.

The Lady Rebel duo of Marianne Bakken and Gyorgyi Zsiros won 8-2 at No. 2 and Tracie Chong and Leentjie Oosthuizen prevailed 8-5 on court three. At the top spot, 40th-ranked IU pair Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran won 8-4 over Paulina Janus and Agnieszka Abram.

In singles play, UNLV's 92nd-ranked Zsiros won at the second spot when Tran retired because of illness down 4-2 in the first set. Janus quickly got by Amanda Field 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 position to make it 3-0. Chong then clinched the team match with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 4 over Schlukebir.

The Hoosiers then won the remaining three matches to form the final score.

"This was the biggest win of the spring for us," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "To beat a perennial power like Indiana shows how far we've come. There is no question we have taken this program to a higher level."

UNLV is off until hosting league-rival Brigham Young on March 22 and Utah one day later.

"This win puts us in great position heading into (Mountain West) conference play," Cory said. "BYU and Utah will both challenge us and we need to be ready."
