SACRAMENTO - Sophomore pitcher Kacey Ellis threw her first shutout of the season and UNLV smacked 11 hits in a 5-0 whitewash of IUPUI at the Capital Classic softball tournament on Friday.
The Rebels leapt to an early lead, scoring four times in the bottom of the first for a lead they would never surrender. Lisa Moses, Geney Orris, Morgan Bostwick, Melissa Inouye and Ellis all singled in the inning before the Jaguars (3-7) pulled starting pitcher Julia Hartnell.
While the Rebels didn't have exactly the same results against IUPUI reliever Amy Odinsoff, they did collect at least one hit in four of the last five innings in which they batted. But despite the nifty hitting and timely sacrifices, the Rebels were unable to push another run across until the sixth on an RBI single by Pauline Glenn.
Ellis, meanwhile, cruised with the lead. She escaped the Jaguars only threat in the second, leaving the bases loaded with some defensive handiwork from her teammates.
IUPUI collected just seven hits in the game, all of them singles, and the Rebels gave them no extra help by turning in only their second errorless game of the year.
At 1-1 in tourney pool play, UNLV will play twice more on Friday with slated matchups against Sacramento State and Middle Tennessee.
