Glenn Goes Yard To Seal Softball Win

Box Score

SACRAMENTO - Pauline Glenn hit a leadoff solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and lead the UNLV softball team to a 4-2 win over Middle Tennessee at the Capital Classic on Friday.

The win was the Rebels' third straight and third of the day as UNLV completed pool play in the tournament with a tripleheader.

It also marked the second come-from-behind win in five games and the second time this season that Glenn has homered to score the winning run.

MTSU (11-12) jumped out to the early lead, scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning on the Rebels' first fielding error in three games.

UNLV (15-16) rallied in the third to knot the game at two with a pair of clutch singles from outfielders Lisa Moses and Bridget Byrne.

A see-saw pitching duel between the Blue Raiders' Amanda Kendall and the Rebels' Geney Orris kept the game exciting, but without more runs. Kendall retired nine of the next 10 Rebels after allowing the two runs, and Orris pitched herself out of a two-runner jam.

Still threatening to score, MTSU put the first two batters of the sixth aboard. Jackie Kerrigan came into relieve Orris, but walked the next batter to load the bases with nobody out.

The go-ahead run would never score, however. Kerrigan struck out the next batter. First baseman Kacey Ellis turned an amazing defensive play, fielding a shallow bunt and throwing home just in time for the second out. A final strikeout kept the Rebels in the game and set the stage for Glenn's heroics.

With the win, UNLV claimed the No. 2 seed in its pool play and will face Long Island, the No. 4 seed from Pool B, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
