PORTLAND, Ore. - For the second time in three games, the UNLV softball team pounded out double figures in hits as the Rebels cruised to a 7-3 win in the nightcap to split a Sunday doubleheader at Portland State.
UNLV (18-19) did most of its damage in the third inning, producing five runs on six hits. Carrie Bayless and Lisa Moses started the rally, both dropping one-out singles into left field. With the intent of laying down a sacrifice bunt, speedy Bridget Byrne raced to first before the Vikings' fielding attempt sailed overhead into right field, scoring Bayless and pushing Moses to third.
Geney Orris delivered the fourth hit in-a-row, singling to right to drive in Moses. Pauline Glenn followed with a walk after Bridget Byrne was nabbed at home in a double steal for the inning's second out. However, a Morgan Bostwick single and Kacey Ellis double scored two more runs to give the Rebels a 5-0 edge.
The Vikings (7-14) answered with a rally of their own in the bottom of the third, using three singles, a walk and a Rebel fielding error to push three runs across. Ellis put out the fire before the Rebels' lead burned away, stranding three potential PSU runs.
UNLV tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on Pauline Glenn's fifth home run of the year and an RBI double by Arica Painter.
The Rebels used the big win to salvage a split on the day, dropping a heartbreaker in the day's first game, 1-0.
A manufactured run in the bottom of the first and a solid pitching performance by PSU pitcher Morgan Seibert led the Vikings to a 1-0 victory in the doubleheader's opener.
The Vikings scored a leadoff single by Monica Martell for the game's only run, advancing the runner with the aid of a sac bunt and a wild pitch before Nichole Ivie's RBI single provided the difference in the game.
The singles were two of just five hits given up by Rebel pitcher Jackie Kerrigan (7-9), who pitched well despite losing her third straight start. She struck out two and walked one.
Seibert controlled the Rebel lineup, allowing just three singles and three walks while striking out seven. Lisa Moses collected both singles, including a leadoff hit in the sixth, but was left stranded at third in the Rebels' best opportunity.
The Rebels will continue their five-game road swing with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday against the University
