ST. GEORGE, Utah - When Geney Orris belted her fifth home run of the year in the first inning, little did the UNLV softball team know that the solo shot would end up marking the difference in the Rebels 1-0 win over Utah State at the Utah Red Desert Classic on Sunday.
In just the Rebels' third plate appearance of the game, Orris launched a pitch from Aggie starter Kristin Hommel over the centerfield fence to account for all of the game's scoring.
Once UNLV (10-13) led, it rode the pitching of freshman Jackie Kerrigan. Jackie the K controlled the Utah State (1-15) hitters, allowing just four singles and striking out five.
UNLV also only produced four hits. Orris delivered two of those, including the game's most important one.
The win was the Rebels' first in the Utah Red Desert Classic and snapped an eight-game losing streak.
UNLV return home to host Oregon, Boston College and Notre Dame in a mini-tournament at Eller Media Stadium on Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 10. A change in originally scheduled start times has games beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
