COLUMBUS, Ohio - The UNLV men's golf team sits atop the leaderboard after the first round of the Kepler Intercollegiate on Friday, shooting four-over par as a team at the par-71 Ohio State Scarlet Course.

The Rebels hold just a narrow one-stroke edge over Northwestern and lead third-place Purdue by five shots.

It was not the usual suspects that pushed UNLV to the top, but a couple of surprises in the lineup. Sophomore Brandon Askew and freshman J.C. Deacon both carded even-par 71s and sit in a seven-way tie for second place. Ohio State's Scott Miller holds a three-stroke lead after firing a 68.

Right behind his teammates is Rebel freshman Ryan Moore, who is tied for ninth but just four strokes off the leader's pace.

Clark Corbett rounded out UNLV's scoring with a three-over 74, tying him for 25th overall. Brien Davis' 76 did not count toward the team total, but did land him in a tie for 44th.

The Rebels continue play at the Kepler on Saturday and Sunday.
