Godwin Golden In The Pinch

April 14, 2002

Box Score

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomore Wendy Godwin delivered a bases-loaded pinch-hit double in the top of the sixth to score two runs and lead the UNLV softball team to a 6-4 come-from-behind win in the second game of a doubleheader against the University of New Mexico on Sunday.

The win salvaged a split for the Rebels (23-29, 3-7), who dropped the opener 6-1.

The Rebels had fallen behind 3-2 in the third after New Mexico's (13-22-1, 5-5) Michelle Carter hit a three-run homer. Both teams put another run on the board for a 4-3 Lobo lead before UNLV reclaimed the lead in the sixth.

With one out, Melissa Inouye and Amber Campbell hit back-to-back singles, and the Rebels loaded the bases after a Lobo fielding error. That set the stage for Godwin, who produced the first extra-base hit of her career to put the Rebels on top.

UNLV took the first lead in the game in the top of the second on a solo crush by Geney Orris that cleared the second fence behind left field, approximately 275 feet away. The Rebels also scored runs in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh, including an opposite field home run by Pauline Glenn.

Defensively, three errors led to two unearned runs, but Orris upped her record to 6-6 on the year by holding the Lobos to four hits and two earned runs. Lauren McCoy (2-6) took the loss for New Mexico.

In the opener, the Lobos went to work early, scoring three times in the first and twice more in the second. After giving up a leadoff double in the third, UNLV starter Nicole Truax was replaced by Jackie Kerrigan, but the damage was already done as UNM held a 5-0 edge.

Hayley Punter (8-9), who earned both starts for the Lobos, cruised through the early innings, retiring the first eight hitters she faced before surrendering a single to Carrie Bayless. She made it to the fifth, but was lifted after UNLV hit back-to-back singles for its best threat of the game.

The Rebels managed four hits off UNM reliever Amy Dumas, including doubles by Morgan Bostwick and Campbell. Campbell's double, in the seventh, set up the Rebs' only run as Bayless singled up the middle to disrupt the shutout.

Truax took the loss, throwing two innings. Kerrigan threw four in relief, allowing just four hits and a single unearned run.

UNLV continues its current eight-game road swing on Friday, April 19, when it travels to Salt Lake City to face Utah in a conference doubleheader.
