COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference has declared Sunday's softball doubleheader between UNLV and Utah as a non-conference contest, and the games will not count toward either team's league record or rank.
Citing a rule in the conference by-laws, games may only be counted as conference games if they are played on the originally scheduled date. The Rebels and Utes were slated to face each other on Friday, April 19, but snow in the Salt Lake City area forced a postponement. Both UNLV and Utah had action also scheduled for Saturday, April 20, so the twin bill was pushed back to Sunday, April 21.
Utah won both games of the marathon feature, 11-10 and 6-5 in 11 innings. Had the games counted toward their league record, the Utes (22-31, 7-3) would share the league lead with San Diego State. UNLV (23-31, 3-7) sits in sixth place, one game behind BYU.
Sunday's games were the only of the week for UNLV, which had to cancel its rematch with BYU on Saturday after the snow continued in northern Utah through Friday night. Utah's showdown with San Diego State for the inside track on the league title was also abandoned.
