COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV senior designated player Geney Orris has been selected as the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.
The Brea, Calif., product led the Rebels in hitting last week with an amazing .571 average and belted two homers in UNLV's 6-5 loss at Utah. The first was a three-run shot to force the game into extra innings, and the second was a solo blast that gave the Rebs a 10th-inning lead.
For the season, Orris leads the team in nearly every offensive category and ranks among the league leaders. She boasts 10 home runs on the year, her single-season best.
The award is Orris' second this season. She earned MWC Pitcher of the Week honors on Feb. 12 after defeating then-No. 24 Umass. Orris becomes the first player in two years to claim the league's Player and Pitcher of the Week awards in the same season. New Mexico's Danielle Cassara and Kelly Moore both turned the trick in 2000.
