LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team was held scoreless in its Mountain West Conference doubleheader against San Diego State on Saturday, dropping 3-0 and 1-0 decisions at Eller Media Stadium.
Despite good pitching and solid fielding, the Rebels (21-27, 1-5) were unable to produce any runs off the Aztec pitchers. Jeni Tornquist (6-3) held UNLV at bay for the first four innings of the opener, long enough to record the victory. Bre DeSanta was the Aztecs' star of the day, throwing the last three innings to save the opener before tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout in the nightcap.
Geney Orris, looking for her third straight win, kept the Rebels within reach in the first game. She did not allow a run until the fifth innings when the Aztecs' Janna Kovensky hit a one-out double and scored one play later, on an RBI single by Tiffany Goudy.
After assuming the lead, SDSU (28-18-1, 5-1) went to DeSanta to preserve the win. She retired the first eight batters she faced, including four by strikeout, before Carrie Bayless and Lisa Moses collected two-out singles in the seventh.
SDSU added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, singling twice off Orris in the inning before back-to-back doubles of Rebel reliever Kacey Ellis put the Aztecs up, 3-0.
The Rebels collected seven hits, all singles and none dangerous. Only once, in the second inning, did a UNLV runner reach third.
UNLV's two hits off DeSanta in the final inning matched as many as it would collect off the Aztec ace over the next seven innings. In the second game, DeSanta cruised through the first three innings without allowing so much as a base runner. But Moses came through again, breaking up the perfect game with a leadoff single in the fourth.
The Rebel right fielder also collected UNLV's only other hit in the game, a leadoff single in the sixth, giving her three of UNLV's four hits off DeSanta.
DeSanta pitched with a lead throughout the game as SDSU hammered out the game's only run in the first inning. Kovensky again was the hero, hitting a two-out double and scoring on a triple to right field by Goudy.
As has happened many times this season, Jackie Kerrigan (8-12) was tagged with a loss despite allowing just four hits and a single run. She struck out eight.
With the sweep, SDSU maintains its spot among the top of the Mountain West Conference standings while the Rebels remain in the cellar with a 1-5 mark. UNLV looks to improve that record next weekend when it plays both Colorado State and New Mexico in road doubleheaders on Friday, April 12 and Sunday, April 14, respectively.
