LAS VEGAS - Junior Rachael Buscovich (Santa Rosa, Calif.) had two second half goals to give the UNLV women's soccer team a 5-0 shutout of Mesa College in a preseason exhibition game Saturday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The Rebels had 17 shots in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of regulation.
In the 47th minute, a rare moment in soccer occurred as Buscovich nailed a goal directly off a corner kick put-in. She later earned her fourth point of the night by sinking a successful penalty kick attempt at 81:28.
Sophomore Annii Magliulo (Pengrove, Calif.), senior Melicia Wright (Kingston, Jamaica) and freshman Jessica Brown (Las Vegas) provided the remaining goals in the shutout.
The Rebel defense allowed only one shot attempt the entire match. Mesa College goalkeeper Kynan Sullivan made eight saves in 90 minutes of play.
UNLV will open the 2002 regular season traveling to the Midwest to face Kansas on Friday, Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. in Lawrence, Kansas, and Drury College on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. in St. Louis.
