LAS VEGAS - Playing against its third nationally-ranked team of the season, the UNLV men's soccer team stunned No. 24 Hofstra, 2-0, in the second game of the UNLV / FILA Classic held Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Freshman Mark Stock (Tigard, Ore.) scored his second straight game-winning goal off a pass deflection by junior Leandro Iocco (Rosario, Argentina) from 10-yards out, sinking the ball into the leftside bottom corner at 11:38. Last week, Stock lifted the Rebels to a 2-1 overtime victory over Cal Poly in Albuquerque.
The Rebels would keep their lead for the remainder of the game. In the second half, senior Tuomas Talvio (Helsinki, Finland) connected on a pass from fellow senior Kelly Frederick (St. John's, Antigua) to put the game away in the 64th minute.
With the shutout, UNLV (4-3) snapped the Pride's undefeated four-game win streak in a first time meeting between both schools. The Rebels last defeated a top-25 opponent on Sept. 23, 2001, with a 6-1 upset of fifth-ranked and defending national champion Connecticut.
Senior goalkeeper Justin Dennis (Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned his first shutout of the season with three saves, while Hofstra's Daniel Greening had seven saves.
The Rebels continue tournament play on Sunday, Sept. 22 with UNLV taking on Central Florida (2-2-1) at noon and UC Riverside (2-3-2) and Hofstra (4-1) following at 2 p.m. All games played at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
