LAS VEGAS - A 9-0 blowout of intrastate rival Nevada, Reno, marked a school record for most goals in a game and largest margin of victory for the UNLV women's soccer team Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The Rebels wasted no time to open the scoring. Sophomore Blynnda Bascones (Las Vegas) scored her first career goal five minutes into the game after sending a cross pass into the box with the ball tipped into the goal by UNR goalkeeper Megan Tarpenning. Fellow sophomore Jenny Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) found a cross in the middle from junior Rachael Buscovich (Santa Rosa, Calif.) at 16:35 to put the game at 2-0.
At the 17:53 minute mark, junior defender Tania Lee (Thornton, Colo.) registered the Rebels' third goal of the match directly off a free kick left of net. Freshman Nickie Olson (Las Vegas) earned her first career goal minutes before the interval off an assist from senior Kelly Janke (Bellflower, Calif.) to send the Rebels into halftime with a 4-0 lead.
The scoring never stopped. Sophomore Annii Magliulo (Pengrove, Calif.) claimed an unassisted goal off a loose ball in the box at 70:14. Janke, who ended the night with three-points, scored in the 76th minute off a corner kick by senior Cristyn Enea (San Ramon, Calif.).
In the 83rd minute, senior Cosette (Joffs) Packer (Henderson) made contact with the ball off a rebound in-front of the net for the seventh Rebel goal of the match. Magliulo followed up with her second goal of the game at 87:29, while freshman Jessica Brown (Las Vegas) received UNLV's last score in the final minutes of the match, after sending in a corner kick to the box with UNR defenders deflecting the ball into the net on an own-goal.
UNLV coach Dan Abdalla, in his third season, collected his 25th career coaching victory. The all-time series versus UNR now moves to 2-0-0. The Wolf Pack has yet to score a goal against their state rivals.
The Rebels (2-0-1) continue tournament play on Sunday, Sept. 8 hosting Fresno State (1-2) at noon, while Southern Utah (0-3) and UNR (0-3) meet at 2 p.m. All games played at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
