LAS VEGAS - Coming off a disappointing 5-1 loss to 19th-ranked Utah on Thursday night, the UNLV women's soccer team hopes to avoid its first-ever 0-3 start in the Mountain West Conference as they host BYU on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at Peter Johann Field. The Rebels, 6-7-2 overall, are also looking for their first-ever win over the Cougars after losing the first six games in the series.
Goalkeepers Jenna Huff and Desiree Kelly have been very strong in goal for the Rebels, helping the team post a 1.26 goals against average, third best in the league, and six shutouts on the season, one short of tying the school record set in 2001. On offense, the Rebels have been led by junior midfielder Anni Magliulo, tied for first in goals with seven, and tied for second in points with 16. Erin Egertson and Rachael Buscovich have both added three goals on the year.
BYU boasted a Mountain West Conference 15-game win streak entering their Thursday night game at San Diego State, but saw the Aztecs pull off a surprising 1-0 upset in San Diego, Calif. It was only the third time the Cougars had been shutout all season, and first since a 1-0 loss to Montana. Senior forward Terra Bigelow leads the team with five goals, while senior midfielder Aleisha Rose has four goals and a league-high nine assists for 17 points on the season, which also paces the conference.
