Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - Kevin Sapanli scored two goals, one in each half, to lead San Diego State to a 3-1 victory over UNLV in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Monday night from Peter Johann Field. The Rebels fell to 4-9, 1-1 in the conference with the loss, while San Diego State won their MPSF opener to improve to 7-4-1 overall, 1-0 in the league.
The Rebels struck first in the game, as senior midfielder Alex Hernandez drove down the left baseline and sent a perfect cross into the middle of the box to senior forward Leandro Iocco, and his shot to the right post gave UNLV a 1-0 lead at the 9:07 mark.
Sapanli would tie the game for the Aztecs at the 21:43 mark, when he took a pass from Kenny Fechner in the middle of the box and blasted a shot to the left corner. Both teams had several more chances to score, but it would be the Aztecs who would find the back of the net, as Sapanli scored his second goal of the game on a shot from just outside the top of the box at the 64:37 mark. Dione Scott assisted on the goal. Heath Creager added an insurance goal for the Aztecs, when both Creager and UNLV goalkeeper Peter Clitheroe went up for a ball in the air outside of the box. Creager won the battle, and his header rolled untouched into the empty net for the final score of the game, making it 3-1 at the 70:26 mark.
Clitheroe finished with eight saves for the game while allowing three goals. Aztec goalie Colin Hanke allowed one goal and posted six saves.
The Rebels return to action on Thursday, Oct. 23, as they host MPSF rival San Jose State at 7:30 p.m. at Peter Johann Field.
