LAS VEGAS - UNLV sophomore Henner Nehles won in straight sets to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals of the 2003 ITA Mountain Region Men's Tennis Championships, which continued at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Friday.
Nehles, seeded ninth, got by sixth-seeded Federico Ueltschi of Montana State 6-4, 6-4. He will face second-seeded Divan Coetzee of New Mexico in the first of Saturday's two rounds of singles.
The other Rebel that was still alive in the singles main draw fell in heart-breaking fashion. Romain Massaro, who had started his sophomore season by winning his first eight matches, rallied in the final two sets but ultimately fell to Hungsoon Park of Utah State 6-3, 5-7, 7-6. In doubles play, Nehles and partner Aviram Salomon lost in the round of 16 Friday, 8-4, to fourth-seeded Richard Dasek and Erik Nyman of BYU.
More than 120 players from 16 western teams have gathered for the event, which runs through Sunday on campus. There will be one round of singles and two rounds of doubles Friday.
