ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico scored on a penalty kick just 28 seconds into overtime to hand UNLV a 1-0 loss in Mountain West Conference women's soccer action on Friday night at the UNM Soccer Complex in Albuquerque, N.M. The Lobos earned their first conference win of the season as they improved to 2-9-3, and 1-3 in the league, while the Rebels fell to 6-9-2 and 0-4 in the MWC.
The winning score came from freshman forward Kristine Sweat at the 90:27 mark of overtime. With overtime just underway, junior forward LeAnne Hendren was was taken down by a Rebel defender, setting up a penalty kick. Sweat took the kick and converted for her third goal of the year to win the game for the Lobos.
For the game, the Lobos outshot UNLV 24-12. Rebel goalkeeper Jenna Huff finished with five saves in goal, while New Mexico goalie Kristen Winters also posted five saves for the game.
UNLV looks to claim their first conference win of the year on Sunday as they take on Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo., at Noon.
