The UNLV women's soccer team will be looking to advance past the first round of the conference tournament for just the second time in program history as the Rebels open play in the first round of the 2003 Mountain West Soccer Championship on Wednesday in Salt Lake City, Utah. UNLV, the fifth-seed in the tournament for the second straight year, will meet fourth-seeded San Diego State at 1 p.m. in the opening round of the tournament.

Wednesday's game is a rematch for the teams, as UNLV closed out the regular season with a 1-0 win over The Aztecs at home on the Rebels' Senior Night. The victory was also the first-ever for UNLV over San Diego State in seven meetings. The matchup between the two marks the second straight year the teams ended the regular season against each other, and then faced each other as the fourth and fifth seeds in the conference tournament. In last year's tournament at Provo, Utah, SDSU won in the final minute 2-1 on a penalty kick from Kim Castellanos. U NLV finished the regular season at 8-9-2 overall and 2-4 in conference play, but are currently on a two-game win streak, and have allowed just one goal in their last three games, on a penalty kick in a overtime loss at New Mexico. Goalkeeper Jenna Huff, the current MWC Defensive Player of the Week after posting a shutout and five saves against SDSU, has been outstanding in goal this year, with a school record six solo shutouts on the year, and has helped UNLV post a school record eight shutouts as a team. She is currently holding a 1.18 goals against average and has 102 saves for the season.
On offense, the Rebels have been paced by junior midfielder Annii Magliulo, tied for first in the conference in both goals with eight and points with 20. Erin Egertson, who scored the game-winner against the Aztecs on Saturday night, is next of the team with four goals and four assists for 12 points, while Rachael Buscovich has three goals on the season.
San Diego State is 7-9-2 overall and 2-3-1 on the season. The Aztecs have just three wins in their last seven games, and have been shutout in three of their last four contests. They are led this year Castellanos with six goals and one assist for 12 points, while Lisette Martinez and Becky Prilaman both have four assists on the season. Stephanie Pearson is posting a 1.33 goals against average, and is tied for the league-lead with seven shutouts for the year.
