Rebels Snuff Defending National Champs

Nov. 7, 2003

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The UNLV men's golf team posted a 3-2 victory over No. 2 Clemson in the quarterfinals of the Hooters Match Play Collegiate Championship at Barefoot Resort on Friday.

Ryan Moore, Ryan Keeney and Andres Gonzales won their afternoon matches to give the 12th-ranked Rebels the majority of the wins in the five-man match and send UNLV to the semifinals.

Darkness suspended second-round play before all teams had finished competing. The Rebels were the only team to advance to the semifinals, and their opponent is still yet to be determined. Seventh-seeded Oklahoma State has a 2-1 lead over 15th-seed North Carolina State, but the Wolf Pack have two golfers on the course with leads and three holes to play.

The Rebels victory over Clemson was the team's second of the day. UNLV knocked off sixth-seeded Arizona State in the first round played Friday morning.

Moore, Keeney and Gonzales all led from start to finish in their matches. Moore was the biggest winner, topping the Tigers' Gregg Jones 6 and 5. Keeney defeated Jack Ferguson 4 and 3, and Gonzales was a 3 and 2 winner over Brian Duncan.

The Tigers' two match wins came from Matt Hendrix, who never trailed in a 5 and 4 win over Travis Whisman, and Brent Delahoussaye, who stopped JC Deacon 2 and 1.

The suspended round will finish on Saturday morning before third-round play begins.
