Rebel Upset Thwarted In Playoff

Nov. 9, 2003

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Top-ranked Florida needed three extra playoff holes to secure a victory over the UNLV men's golf team in the finals of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at Barefoot Resort on Sunday.

The Rebels, seeded 11th, had already upset three teams on their way to the final matchup with the top-seeded Gators. UNLV battled Florida to a 2-2 tied, with sophomore Andres Gonzales halving his match against Ryan Cochran.

Cochran battled back to tie his match with Gonzales on the final hole, leaving the squads all square at 2-2-1 and forcing the individual playoff.

Ryan Moore won his fourth match of the tournament, defeating Camilo Villegas 2 and 1 to lead the Rebels.

Travis Whisman pitched in with the other match victory, topping Matt Every 2 and 1.

Brett Stegmaier took a 1 up win from Ryan Keeney and Jessie Mudd beat JC Deacon 4 and 3 in the Rebels' two losses.

Despite the overtime loss, the 12th-ranked Rebels finish second at the prestigious event, wrapping up their fall season.
