FRESNO, Calif. - Fighting through sickness and injuries, the 15th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team was upset 6-1 by No. 23 Fresno State before a hostile crowd at Wathen Tennis Center Saturday.
The Lady Rebels fell to 2-1 while the Bulldogs improved to 2-1 in downing their former Big West and WAC rival for the third consecutive meeting.
"Today was very disappointing," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "Fresno State played a solid match but we had a rough week as far as players being hurt and others having colds. Also, it's clear that the fact that one of our top players (former Lady Rebel Leentjie Oosthuizen of South Africa) did not rejoin the team after Christmas break was devastating to our lineup."
The Bulldogs began the morning by winning all three doubles matches to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, UNLV's only point came at the second spot where 120th-ranked Gyorgyi Zsiros downed Lucia Sainz 6-3, 6-4 to raise her career dual-match record to an incredible 24-1. Lady Rebel senior Paulina Janus, ranked 85th, nearly earned an upset win at the top position but fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) to No. 27 Chloe Carlotti. No other UNLV player won as much as a set.
The Lady Rebels will get time to get healthy and regroup because they are off until opening a seven-match homestand beginning February 21 vs. UC Riverside at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
