PORTLAND, Ore. - The UNLV men's soccer team opened the 2003 season with a 5-1 loss to Washington in both schools' season opener on Saturday at the Nike Portland Invitational.

UNLV senior Alex Hernandez got the scoring started early with a 10-yard bullet off senior Leandro Iocco's crossing pass in the third minute.

Washington (1-0), however, responded with five unanswered goals en route to the win.

The Huskies led 2-1 at halftime and recorded 12 shots on goal to the Rebels' (0-1) six for the match.

Washington sophpomore Leo Totev led all scorers with two goals and junior C.J. Klass recorded two assists.

UNLV will face host Portland on Monday at 2:15 p.m. and will open its home slate on Sept. 5 vs. Wisconsin.
